Yesterday at 7.30am while we were still in the overnight stay room at the hospital we heard the phone ring out in the corridor and somehow I just knew it was for us and sure enough another one of the parents in the unit came to the door and told me it was for us. When I answered the phone it was the consultant who was on PICU overnight, he told me that Daniel had just had a profound desaturation and that when he was bagged he came up but then went down again. At this point they had to start chest compressions as he had stopped breathing and I am sure he said his heart stopped beating for about 20 second, though I could have misheard him. When we went down to the unit they explained that they had been taking blood and needed to suction him and that was when he had his turn, they say that his airway and lungs had collapsed and that was what triggered it. Now the way we understood it was that the tracheostomy was to stop the airway from collapsing but we are told that was not the reason; the reason was because he needed long term ventilation and also as he kept extubating himself that it would be better for him. After this episode he settled down again but he was still a little agitated but then that would be down to the drug weaning as we’d said before. Due to having to work late I didn’t get to see him much yesterday but when I did he was really settled once he was back in his bed and seemed a little more relaxed but that could just be me. Hopefully this little episode will be the last one as it is one of the more terrifying things that you can have to go through and as time passes I’m sure that it cannot be good for Danny.
