Well today has been nothing if not eventful, I went down to see Danny on my way out to work at 8.30 this morning and he’d had a settled night so all was well. Next thing I get a call from Julie about 11am asked if I knew that they were planning on taking Dan to the Queens today, which of course I didn’t. The plan, it was explained, was to transfer him today and operate tomorrow morning I just think that they maybe forgot to tell us until it was about time to go, but then this is starting to become the “norm”. So as Julie explained to them we were supposed to be meeting with a nurse from the Queens at 5.30pm today and discussing the PICU and then viewing PICU before Danny was moved, obviously all this was soon to go out the window. So Julie managed to arrange with them to view PICU before Danny’s transfer was made and although she was told the referral to King’s College has not been made yet she has been assured it will be. We are somewhat reserved on this as in the past we have been told on thing and then they have done the complete opposite. None the less I spoke to the professor in London and explained to him that we have been told the referral will be made and he sounded very pleased that this was being done and asked that I let him know what date he is being moved.
Anyhow, by teatime Danny had been moved and Julie had signed the necessary paperwork for his operation and he was settling into the PICU. We have been told that within 7 days of his trachy he would be considered settled, so from there arrangements can then be made to move to London. The unit itself is much different to neonatal units as nursing is done on a “one to one” basis which means more focused care for Danny but this policy is due to the PICU handling children upto 18 years old (I think) which obviously require more attention in general. The staff on the unit have been really friendly and have explained what all the monitors and alarms mean, though we have gotten a feel for them over the last 4 months just they look different here. So all in all were really pleased to finally have movement though it seems oddly convenient that while GOS did not have a bed available or an operating slot until mid-November the Queens were able to make space almost immediately, but then maybe I’m just cynical……still who wouldn’t be. As for Jules she is glad to see Danny moving forward and while the operation has it’s own worries they are far less than the apparent politics that we have been drowning in of late at the hands of certain parties. Danny’s operation is scheduled for 8.30am tomorrow morning so it’s time for me to get off to bed to get some rest before his operation, as the ENT surgeon is coming to see us at 7.30am to see us. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as events unfold.
