So whats been happening today then? Well last night at 22.10 Daniel managed to self-extubated himself from the ventilator, something which he has only done a couple of times but never under such heavy sedation. So at 22.40 the reintubated him and settled him back onto the ventilator, however once again a little after 7 this morning he did the same thing again. I’m not being funny but I’m beginning to question how he’s managing to do this as he should have a nurse with him most of the time as is the case over at the City. At 3pm he had a de-sat to 88% and a bradycardia where his heartrate fell to 67, for some reason though this has not been recorded in his notes but the nurse told us it had happened. At
4.30 he had another de-sat to 22% and bradycardia, this time his heartrate fell to 80. Jules was with him this time when it happened and as his sats started to fall the monitor began to alarm and no-one responded, by the time it reached 60% the alarm was critical and one nurse glanced at him as she walked straight past! Another nurse shouted to Daniels nurse that it was “her” and that “I have my hands in this incubator”. When his nurse arrived his sats had fell to 22%, she tried to ask for help but no-one was listening so another nurse called a doctor over, two doctors came over to assist. They eventually managed to get Danny back up but it took longer as he had been allowed to fall so low. After this
Jules was beside herself and to be honest I can see her really being taken down by all of this, if he is not brought away from here on Monday as planned then I don’t know what the impact will be for her. It is not because of the history either it is simply because of the terrible care that is being given to Daniel and the fact that you do not feel you can talk to them about it as you do not feel that they are approachable.
At 7pm he had another de-sat this time because he had been coughing and he fell to 77%, but as it was handover his alarm was ignored. It took nearly half a minute for someone to attend his alarm and turn his oxygen up.
I just don’t know what to think at the minute because this hospital is supposed to have a very good reputation but right now the only positive thing that I have found is the man serving in the Cybercafe!! So does NHS really stand for Neonatal Horror Service then???
